It's been a while since we gave updates about the progress of the shelter but we have the "small team - big responsibilities" excuse 😅We arrived in Athens 3 days ago and we now have time to deal with.... everything.A few weeks ago, we welcomed two really motivated people from Thessaloniki to help us! After the Belgian group of volunteers had to leave earlier than it was planned, according to the dangerous situation of fire, we were hesitating to welcome new people again this summer. We discussed the difficulties they might have to face during their stay, but they really wanted to visit us which we couldn't deny!Through their visit, and the visit of some friends meanwhile, we achieved finishing some DIY constructions, cutting a lot of burnt trees, and cleaning a part of dead plants and rocks. We also put on the table some future plans about permaculture and the place for the geese and turkeys. There are different parts of the land where streams are passing through during rainy days and that blocks some of the ideas that we have. We can begin with the safest parts, like the area next to the well, which is ideal to start planting some veggies. We are still struggling to decide where the place of the geese and turkeys is going to be though. We have to dig a pond and their place needs to be safe from streams and wind during winter. We also think to buy cheap small trailers for them, instead of building a wooden house, to keep them safe from predators and cold during the night. We don't know how the land and the ground react with the rain but with the help of geologists, we have some leads.the next work on the land will start by the end of September.Till then, you will be able to find us in Athens.... cooking vegan at events or organizing our own one. Thanks for your support and see you soon! ... Greece's heatwave is not going away as the temperature is going up to 45 degrees every day. For this reason, we must be on land to start working, maximum at 7 am or in the afternoon. The wildfire hotspots are becoming a daily occurrence. The heatwave is not the cause of this tragedy, but rather humans setting fires either intentionally or accidentally.Under these circumstances, it was too dangerous for 15 people to live in the field for the moment. Now we continue on our own because we don't want to delay the construction of the shelter anymore and we will welcome smaller groups of people in the upcoming weeks. We think about different ways and possibilities to protect and save animals in case of a fire. One of the options is to plant fire-resistant plants around the fence. Don't hesitate to contact us if you have any knowledge or other information related to that type of situation.Until then, some of the work that needs to be done is to clean the land of the burnt trees and rocks, build a wooden pergola to be able to enjoy some shadow and prepare the place for our first residents, the geese and turkeys who will arrive in the next few months. This project is growing slowly every day, but it cannot be done without your support. So if you are interested in joining us, feel free to contact us. ... See MoreSee Less

It’s the third day working on the field, and it’s been so busy that we didn’t have the time to give an update! 15 volunteers from Belgium arrived at the shelter on Tuesday, and we all had to deal with the extreme heatwave! We directly started setting up the first dry toilet, the tents, and we unloaded the van with the first equipment. The land had nothing to start living on, so we had to make it livable. We spent four months getting ready and being well-prepared to welcome the first volunteers. Seeing this land taking form to become an animal shelter, exploring the rough nature, meeting amazing little creatures is something that we have been waiting for 10 years to happen, since we started planning this project. Building a shelter, except for the difficulties we are facing every day, is also a big responsibility. First, to the animals and, of course, to nature and to the people that believe in this project and want to see it happen. Despite our excitement about the beginning of the shelter, we saw that some shelters were burnt in Greece. Many animals died, and the shelters were totally destroyed! We cannot imagine how it feels to see a place getting burnt and everything you’ve done to create a safe place for the animals to disappear in a few minutes. We hope that the people who run these places will find the strength to continue helping animals and will not give up! Our land got 90% burnt two years ago, so it is something that already scares us a lot. We decided to create 3 exit gates and we definitely want to invest in getting a truck in the future to be able to save the animals in case of fire. PS : Please, if you care about the animals, get involved and help your local shelters! Instead of judging people who are trying totally alone, without any help from the state, try to help them physically or financially! No matter how small or big the help you can offer is, it really matters and makes a difference. ... See MoreSee Less

Four amazing beings, two turkeys and two geese, will join our shelter in the upcoming months! These boys were rescued by The arc animal sanctuary, but since they need bigger space, we decided to welcome them at our place! After the arc animal sanctuary's fundraising started, we managed to gather  500 euros for their first expenses. We need to build their houses and put a separate safe enclosure for them at the shelter, to avoid them being attacked or attacking other animals. Of course, we also need to cover their transportation expenses from Lefkada. Thank you all for donating to these boys! We can’t wait to meet all of them! ... See MoreSee Less

Here we are, 1 month later.... and we hit the road again tomorrow. We are very excited to go back to Greece but unfortunately very tired. The Ieperfest festival, loading the van and preparing everything like food, van check-up,...we had more than 1 ton of upcycle materials to bring back to Greece. Unfortunately, even with our childhood playing Tetris, we can't bring everything we wanted. We also reached the maximum weight. But w are still very .impressed that we succeeded to put this mountain of food,  building material, cooking stuff for the events and the shelter, our merch, and gift for the friends,...we are pretty full and the size of our sleeping place has reduced, but the 4 legs still have the best cozy spot!See you in Greece in a few days.... let this shelter begin! ... 🔥 Ieper Hardcore Fest 2023 🔥We are really happy for being invited to the @ieperfest festival this year! The past three days were full of music, amazing people, great bands, screenings, speeches, food, distros, diy silkscreen prints, and much more!We participated in the "more than music" section with anti-speciesist and human rights distros and we shared the place with old and new friends like LAG, @saveafricaswildlifebelgium , and @animalrights.be and @palestina_solidariteit . Animal rights documentaries, interview from Ukraine, and interviews with vegans or vegan straightedge bands sent strong messages to the crowd! It's really important to mention that the festival's food and products were 100% vegan and we really hope that more festivals will follow! Thanks to everyone who supported us once again! Today we loaded the van with loooots of material again for the shelter and we will arrive in Greece in a few days to start working at the land! We can't wait to arrive and see by ourselves the progress of the fencing! ... See MoreSee Less

Since we came to Greece this year, almost 4 months ago, we have been trying to decide what we are going to do with the fence of the shelter. We started looking for contractors and offers for the work and the materials. We were informed that the amount that we have to spend, to close the down and the "easier" part of the land by putting 700 meters of fence, was 30K (materials and work including)!! Of course, we were not even close to this amount according to our savings. We visited the land with different contractors, and most of them looked desperate about the size of the land that had to be fenced. It’s a very difficult field with very few straight parts in it. Unfortunately, it’s a job that cannot be done with volunteers since the ground has to be dug with a machine. The fence has to be very strong to be safe for the animals that will live inside. We started realizing that this step will take more time to come than we expected. Anne, the person who adopted Omorfi,  is supporting Doggybagcrew for years in many ways. By the end of 2022, she made a donation of 10k for the fence. It was a big relief but it was just enough to purchase the materials. A few weeks ago, she decided to offer 15K more and thanks to her we are able to put the enclosure at the shelter! Also, while we are here in Belgium, we succeeded to sell our second van and with this money, we will buy a trailer to be able to live on the land. The rest of the amount will be used for the entrance gate.We are really grateful to Anne and of course to anyone who is supporting this project and making it happen! No matter how small or big the help is, it’s a step closer to making this place real! Thanks to all of you we will be ready to accept the first animals very soon! If everything goes well, the fence will be ready at the end August ! ... See MoreSee Less
